Our installation at Emoh Rou supports a bustling local housing co-operative in the heart of Erskineville. With a 35kW shared solar system, their residents save on electricity bills through sharing the power generated.

Pingala has co-operatives in our DNA and we are excited to support a local co-op to reduce their energy bills and their carbon footprint. Funding was provided by the USDN and Cities partnership grant network and was able to subsidise the full cost of the system for the Emoh Rou Co-operative.

The Co-operative is located in Erskineville and provides people with access to affordable housing and secure long term accommodation in a community setting. Residents in apartment buildings often don’t have the option of installing solar due to restricted rooftop access. Pingala Community Energy hopes to change this by demonstrating that working with residents, housing providers and the NSW Government (through Housing NSW), it is possible to install solar that benefits the residents directly and give them significant relief from rising energy costs.

The system is a standard 35kw system, oversized to allow for east and west aspects that will give Emoh Rou early morning generation and power later into the day than a traditional north facing system would deliver. This will be distributed to residents via an Allume Solar Share system and upgrades to smart metering.

There are many small, independent housing co-operatives around Australia that are solving residential housing issues on their own. While it is not easy for them to do so, we hope this will be the first of many housing co-ops we can support in making the move to solar.
